Rila Monastery

The Rila Monastery is the largest and most important Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Founded in the 10th century by St. Ivan of Rila, the monastery is impressive with its architecture, frescoes and historical significance. It is located among the picturesque forests of Rila Mountain, which makes it not only a spiritual but also a naturally inspiring place.

What to see?

• The main church “Nativity of the Mother of God”— remarkable for its frescoes and iconostasis.

• The Monastery Museum— contains a rich collection of icons, books and the unique cross of Master Raphael.

• Tower of Hrello— the oldest preserved building in the complex, dating from the 14th century.

Useful tips:

• Visit the monastery on a weekday to avoid large tourist groups.

• Dress appropriately — people with undressed clothes are not allowed in the monastery.

• Try the traditional Rila mecca, which are sold at the entrance of the monastery.
